The Reading Room- The Start Of Something Good

18 Jul

Hello Beautiful,

Welcome to the Reading Room. One evening while hanging out with my kids at the local bookstore an amazing idea came to me. I should marry my love for books with my

The Start of Something Good

personal development blog. This would allow me to share the wisdom I gather from the new books I read. It is no secret I adore books and hold a special fondness for self-help books. My shelves are loaded with goodies from authors who are interested in helping others achieve their very best.

Every time I read, I am rewarded with a new outlook on life.  Reading allows me to learn and develop my skills so I can better serve you. Now we can share in the conversation. I have also been asked on several occasions to host a book tour. Adding this new element would give me the venue to be a great host for self-help authors seeking to change the world one word at a time.

So what can you expect? You can expect for me to bring you the latest books. I will give you the goods so you will know if you should invest in the books I recommend. You can also expect some reviews of Indie Authors. These are our self-published authors that are making waves with their words and thoughts.

So how does this all work? Authors write and request that I review their books.  Then they send me a review hardback and digital copy. This allows me to read the physical book and travel well with a digital version.  Reviews are then shared to my networks and social media outlets.

Because this is truly a joint venture I want your input. Please leave comments and let me know if you felt the same about the book or if you had different views. Yes you can also recommend books for me to review as well.  Dialogue and discourse always leads to growth and innovation so let the conversations begin …and again I welcome you to the reading room.

As Always I wish You Peace and Joy,

Melisa

Book Review of Thrive by Melisa Alaba

This books gives  us the blueprint of how Arianna constructed a Life and Business that works on her terms.

After experiencing health issues Arianna, a successful business woman and CEO of the Huffington Post, realized that there is more to success than accumulating more power and money. She went on a journey to get her life back. She proposes that women should lead the way in making changes to how we measure success. She concludes that a third metric, our well-being, must be that balancing beam of a successful person.  Thrive  is full of wisdom nuggets about living a holistic life. It also includes the latest research on sleep, mediation and happiness.

Through out the book, Arianna crafts stories that  deliver a prescription for renovating your life. She also shares  personal family  experiences that demonstrate her ideas of the third metric as well as discussing the Harvard research project on Happiness index. Practically speaking, Arianna gives us such simple yet powerful ways to incorporate balance in our life .  Lastly, Arianna leaves us with follow through practical practices such as scheduling social media breaks and taking meetings while walking outdoors.

This is a smart book that references notable scholars such as  Malcolm Gladwell when discussing intuition and is a must-read for business leaders, new graduates and entrepreneurs.

Love to hear what you thought of  Thrive. So let the conversation begin.

Until next time, read on!

The Reading Room – David and Goliath

27 Jun

I remember the moment I got the email. It read “Pre-order David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. Available October 15, 2013”. My heart skipped several beats as I just thought of all the great ideas I was going to devour in a few months. Full disclosure: Malcolm Gladwell is my favorite author! I have read all of his books and I own most of them in hardback and also have them in the e-book format on my Kindle.  In my opinion, Gladwell is a masterful writer who brings to life unique perspectives of historical, psychological and sociological events. He then ties the events into tantalizing life  and business lessons based on data, theories and personal interviews. So the day had come and I picked up my new book David and Goliath from my local bookstore. As I held it in my hand I felt like I had just won a prize of some sort. I held it close as if it were a pot of gold that I had just happened upon. Pulling a seat out at the café I begin the journey with my tour guide  and old friend Gladwell. From the first few pages I knew I was in for a treat. David and Goliath did not disappoint.  Gladwell uses the biblical story of David and Goliath tMalcom's booko challenge our beliefs. The premise of the book begs the question, Does the little guy who wins the fight receive a miracle or is it a underlying system or tactical advantage on his part that secures his winning position? Malcolm leads us through the civil rights movement with stories of historical figures and their strategic  winning plays that changed the course of history. We make a stop at the top universities in the country and come to terms with the big fish and little pond syndrome. Our journey continues with a disadvantaged basketball team that uses the rules of the game to dominate the season. Case after case Gladwell allows us to see the possibilities in every situation. If you are a true fan of Malcolm Gladwell – like I am –  you will walk away thinking this is one of his best works yet. For newbies I suggest reading one chapter at a time and allowing yourself to process and debate the information before continuing on. Malcolm has often been quoted as saying that his true audience is that of intellectually curious individuals who are open to questioning the status quo and who look for a different possibility.  I believe these sentiments are true. I love a good discourse so please write me and let me know your thoughts about Gladwell’s  latest work.

Wishing You Joy,
