The Reading Room- The Four Agreements

15 Aug

One Sunday afternoon while watching Super Soul Sunday I was introduced to Don Miquel Ruiz via an interview with Oprah Winfrey. The interview was full of surprises and new thoughts from this award winning author.  Naturally, I wanted to read the book.  If you are uncomfortable with spiritual types of books the author is quick to point out that this book is not about religion rather is about beinghuman and offering the world humility.

Don Miguel Ruiz

Don Miguel Ruiz

In the book, Don Miquel Ruiz takes us on a spiritual journey through the eyes of the Mexican ancient teachings of the Toltec. The book challenges us to look at our interpersonal skills in a unique way. According to Don Miquel Ruiz we are programmed from birth to follow systems and accordingly we take on beliefs that are orally taught to us. These beliefs cause us suffering and often times cause us to hurt others. This easy to read book provides a way to live a life free of struggle and suffering while learning to be more authentic in our being.

The First Agreement – be Impeccable with your word. This teaches us the value of our words and how they affect everything around us. We are urged to learn to honor our words.

The Second Agreement – don’t take anything personally.  We are challenged to release fear and anxiety by not taking anything personal good or bad. Learning this principle allows us to be free from the thoughts of others.

The Third Agreement – don’t make any assumptions.  We are urged to seek the truth rather than make assumptions about a person or a situation.

The Fourth Agreement – always do your best.  Simple enough but many times we struggle because we work to live up to someone else’s standard. Don prompts us to do our best and let go. While we do our best we are truly living a life of abundance.

The Four Agreements offer us solutions to breaking free from the beliefs that do not serve our purpose.  The message is beautifully written and the sharing of the Toltec culture is an added bonus. I recommend this book to anyone seeking a practical guide on living their best life.

Did you enjoy this selection? Did it challenge your beliefs? Write me and let me know you thoughts.

Wishing you peace and joy,

The Reading Room- The Start Of Something Good

18 Jul

Hello Beautiful,

Welcome to the Reading Room. One evening while hanging out with my kids at the local bookstore an amazing idea came to me. I should marry my love for books with my

Patrice C. Washington, Money Answers for Every Woman

The Start of Something Good

personal development blog. This would allow me to share the wisdom I gather from the new books I read. It is no secret I adore books and hold a special fondness for self-help books. My shelves are loaded with goodies from authors who are interested in helping others achieve their very best.

Every time I read, I am rewarded with a new outlook on life.  Reading allows me to learn and develop my skills so I can better serve you. Now we can share in the conversation. I have also been asked on several occasions to host a book tour. Adding this new element would give me the venue to be a great host for self-help authors seeking to change the world one word at a time.

So what can you expect? You can expect for me to bring you the latest books. I will give you the goods so you will know if you should invest in the books I recommend. You can also expect some reviews of Indie Authors. These are our self-published authors that are making waves with their words and thoughts.

So how does this all work? Authors write and request that I review their books.  Then they send me a review hardback and digital copy. This allows me to read the physical book and travel well with a digital version.  Reviews are then shared to my networks and social media outlets.

Because this is truly a joint venture I want your input. Please leave comments and let me know if you felt the same about the book or if you had different views. Yes you can also recommend books for me to review as well.  Dialogue and discourse always leads to growth and innovation so let the conversations begin …and again I welcome you to the reading room.

As Always I wish You Peace and Joy,

Melisa

Book Review of Thrive by Melisa Alaba

This books gives  us the blueprint of how Arianna constructed a Life and Business that works on her terms.

After experiencing health issues Arianna, a successful business woman and CEO of the Huffington Post, realized that there is more to success than accumulating more power and money. She went on a journey to get her life back. She proposes that women should lead the way in making changes to how we measure success. She concludes that a third metric, our well-being, must be that balancing beam of a successful person.  Thrive  is full of wisdom nuggets about living a holistic life. It also includes the latest research on sleep, mediation and happiness.

Through out the book, Arianna crafts stories that  deliver a prescription for renovating your life. She also shares  personal family  experiences that demonstrate her ideas of the third metric as well as discussing the Harvard research project on Happiness index. Practically speaking, Arianna gives us such simple yet powerful ways to incorporate balance in our life .  Lastly, Arianna leaves us with follow through practical practices such as scheduling social media breaks and taking meetings while walking outdoors.

This is a smart book that references notable scholars such as  Malcolm Gladwell when discussing intuition and is a must-read for business leaders, new graduates and entrepreneurs.

Until next time, read on!

The Reading Room- Instinct, The Power to UnleashYour Inborn Drive

3 Jul

Welcome to the jungle where you must learn to trust your instincts to survive.  TdJakesBishop  TD Jakes is known for using colorful language and engaging stories that transform your being into a new world of existence in his writings and talks.  His new book Instinct, The Power to Unleash Your Inborn Drive,  is served in a similar fashion. Having read most of his works over the years Instinct is somehow different it taps into the whys and hows of mastering ourselves so we can be successful on our path. This is, by far, his best published book yet.

Who best to tell us to trust our instincts than Bishop TD Jakes, an author, playwright, music producer,  film maker, business man and iconic leader of the 21st century.

This book offers up the latest data in research but digs deeper to give us the guidance to ultimately  trust our God given  instincts. Instinct offers solutions to the entrepreneur and to the employee striving to leave his company in search of his dream. Using biblical principles we are instructed to start where we are and to use wisdom in venturing into new jungles.  Yet, what captivates your heart and mind the most is that we are taken on a journey of the Bishops past. He allows us to see his successes and failures and how he used his Instinct to rise above the crowd. Lastly, Bishop TD Jakes calls us to embrace the new era of technology and expand our ideas to the global market place. We are called to use every resource to our advantage and leave no stone unturned.

With many people still suffering from an unstable economy and broken dreams this book gives clear direction in finding a new course and learning to trust your spirit for direction. We are  on uncharted territory but how do you manage relationships, finances and disasters at every turn? Instinct delivers the goods and leaves no-one out in discovering who they are and why they were called for this time.

Yes, my friends, times have changed but we can thrive if we listen and follow our instints.

As always, I want to hear your thoughts. Write me and let me know what you liked or disliked about this book.

Wishing you Peace and Joy,

Melisa

The Reading Room – David and Goliath

27 Jun

I remember the moment I got the email. It read “Pre-order David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. Available October 15, 2013”. My heart skipped several beats as I just thought of all the great ideas I was going to devour in a few months. Full disclosure: Malcolm Gladwell is my favorite author! I have read all of his books and I own most of them in hardback and also have them in the e-book format on my Kindle.  In my opinion, Gladwell is a masterful writer who brings to life unique perspectives of historical, psychological and sociological events. He then ties the events into tantalizing life  and business lessons based on data, theories and personal interviews. So the day had come and I picked up my new book David and Goliath from my local bookstore. As I held it in my hand I felt like I had just won a prize of some sort. I held it close as if it were a pot of gold that I had just happened upon. Pulling a seat out at the café I begin the journey with my tour guide  and old friend Gladwell. From the first few pages I knew I was in for a treat. David and Goliath did not disappoint.  Gladwell uses the biblical story of David and Goliath tMalcom's booko challenge our beliefs. The premise of the book begs the question, Does the little guy who wins the fight receive a miracle or is it a underlying system or tactical advantage on his part that secures his winning position? Malcolm leads us through the civil rights movement with stories of historical figures and their strategic  winning plays that changed the course of history. We make a stop at the top universities in the country and come to terms with the big fish and little pond syndrome. Our journey continues with a disadvantaged basketball team that uses the rules of the game to dominate the season. Case after case Gladwell allows us to see the possibilities in every situation. If you are a true fan of Malcolm Gladwell – like I am –  you will walk away thinking this is one of his best works yet. For newbies I suggest reading one chapter at a time and allowing yourself to process and debate the information before continuing on. Malcolm has often been quoted as saying that his true audience is that of intellectually curious individuals who are open to questioning the status quo and who look for a different possibility.  I believe these sentiments are true. I love a good discourse so please write me and let me know your thoughts about Gladwell’s  latest work.

Wishing You Joy,
