How She Got Free

22 Aug

Entrepreneurship is rewarding but it also can be tough. So how does an entrepreneur manage a family, business, relationships and take care of themselves?   How  She Got Free , 5 Step Spiritual Business Manual to women who lead through Entrepreneurship, offers solutions for the woman who struggles to experience true success in her business and in life.

At an awards show last year I was honored to meet Akilah Richards and Katrina Harrell, panelists at the event. Katrina talked about her struggles and successes as an entrepreneur; she did not want others to experience the trials and errors she had and so she penned How I Got Free, along with Akilah Richards.

How She Got Free

How She Got Free

The book chronicles the life of Layna, an entrepreneur who has experienced success and defeat. Layna longed to live the life of her dreams but found herself off-balance in her health, marriage and in having systems within her business to provide her with the structure she needed to succeed. The story of Layna allows you to peek into the life of a financially successful entrepreneur who lacks systems that allow for a well-lived life.

How She Got Free offers s a five-step plan that will lead you to discovering your Achilles heel in business and in life. Richards and Harrell provide soul work exercises after each chapter which guide you into rebuilding your business model. The authors believe that every business is viable when the right systems are put into place. Harrell hold you accountable for having a strategic business plan, accountability partners, and dealing with personality flaws that may lead to poor choices and decisions. According to Richards, many businesses fail because of lack of planning and delegating.

I  recommend this book for anyone who is struggling in their current business or for new business owners who want to start with a good foundation.  This is a great resource for gaining ideas about how to be a well-balanced entrepreneur. Richards and Harrell are among the growing number of Indie authors who are adding value to the literary community.

The Reading Room- The Power of No

8 Aug

This book immediately caught my attention. The title made me think of my own decision to choose “No” to maintain my authentic self.Power of no So I had an idea or so I thought of what I was in store for.  The power of No, Because One Little Word Can Bring Health, Abundance and Happiness, is simply stated yet profoundly spiritual. James Altucher and Claudia Azula Altucher discuss many of the principles that Eckert Tolle teaches in The Power of Now.

Still the couples captivate you with their unique story-telling style. James and Claudia each share deeply personal stories of loves lost and loves imagined.  Some of the stories make us cry and others make us laugh, but they all cause us to feel. The authors describe their failures and successes with a rare and honest rawness. Their truth is bold and refreshing. The authenticity of the authors rips through the pages.

Throughout the book we are beaconed to question our fear and resist giving up. Fear we are told is not enough to sustain a relationship that hurts us or cause us to hurt others. We must question our fear and choose to fight for love and for peace. James reminds us that we will find love again and life will go on. We are encouraged to create, to dream, and to be.

Claudia and James offer us exercises that guide us in living in now. The wisdom that overlays the book is that we must take care of ourselves. We must maintain our physical, emotional, mental and Spiritual health. James acknowledges that when he practices these principles he makes good decisions and when he abandoned them he made costly mistakes. Claudia allows us the freedom to sit and be quiet with ourselves which allows our mind to recover from all of the world’s noise.

Like many books on healing this book will make your thinking shift. You may cry as you acknowledge activities, people, or things that no longer bring you joy but cause you pain. Whether you choose to act on these feeling is your choice but thoughts planted after reading this book will certainly deepen your journey. This is one of those rare books that forever changes your views and gifts you with a second chance to get living right. This books call us to choose our Ultimate ” Yes” by learning to say NO.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is on a healing journey or is feeling stuck in his or her life. This book is the perfect anecdote to heal your spirit and to start living again.

Mindfulness for Kids

2 May

Mindfulness is usually reserved for adults, but it does not have to be. Children of all ages experience stress and tension physically, the inability to focus or concentrate, as well as distressing emotions (i.e anxiety, anger, sadness). The great thing about children is that they can adapt easily to mindfulness as well.

You may be asking, what is mindfulness? How can I get my child to sit still long enough to practice? The best way to conceptualize mindfulness is the ability to be present and to be in the here and the now. It is a way of observing, describing, and fully engaging in the moment. Now, how can we get our children to fully engage in the moment? Here are some techniques:

 1. Be mindful of the breath: Observing the breath is the simplest way to start mindfulness. For example, if I tell you to not think of the color red, you are definitely going to think of the color red. So if you help the child think about breathing, it will be easier for them to focus on their breath. If you have younger children, right before bed have them get their favorite stuffed animal. Encourage them to rock their toy to sleep. Have them place the toy on their belly and as they take deep breaths in and out, they will create a wave of relaxation for themselves and their favorite toy! Your child will have a nice sleep and their first lesson in mindfulness.

2. Be mindful at school: Homework can be a trying and frustrating task for many children and parents. Be mindful that your child is learning this information for the first time and focusing long enough on something that may not be fun as playing their video game or watching TV, can make it difficult for them to concentrate. Before engaging the homework assignment, take 4 deep breaths counting to 4 and then begin the work. You can breathe in pairs, such as Inhale… Exhale one. Inhale… Exhale two. The child’s job is to stay concentrated in spite of everything else going on around them.

3. Make it a family Affair: Studies show that children are more mindful if their parents are more mindful. I suggest parents practice with your children. Often times, we rush with all the things we have to get done in the day, but slowing down is very beneficial so that you can pay attention. At meal time, be mindful of the food with your child; what it smells like? Feels like? Tastes like? Sounds like? Before rushing out of the house in the morning, take 4 deep breaths as a family and then head out to the car. If you are driving home from school and work, challenge your child to a song duo where you both know the lyrics, and see who can sing it the craziest and the juiciest! The point is to be creative and have you and your child become more mindful each day.

Overall, mindfulness can be what you make it for you and your child. It can be as entertaining, raw, and spontaneous as you can come up with. I encourage you to live your life fully; embracing the moments you can create.

As always, I wish you peace and light on your wellness journey,

Is your life balance out of Whack?

13 Mar

chaos momRecently I had an explosion of beautiful new things that were and are happening to me. I am excited about the new projects and developments in my life. However, I soon realized that my life was quickly getting out of control.  As a coach and counselor, over the years I have assisted folks with creating the life they have always wanted.  It is because of this background, I understand what an unbalanced life can do to you and for you.  But knowledge does not make you immune to living an unhealthy lifestyle.

So in the midst of my very productive season I have had to sit myself down and take some of my own medicine. To live a life of purpose requires that we be in divine connection with our creator.  That connection often takes a sacrifice of us getting in touch with our mind, body and spirit.  So how do you know when you are no longer in balance with God, with the Universe, with your own life?

Here are a few clues:

  • You are often rushed. You seem never to have enough time to completely be anywhere. Your schedule is often overbooked. Or you schedule your events or task too closely together that you don’t have any buffer time.
  • You often skip meals. You may also eat more fast food then home cooked meals.
  • You don’t work out because your schedule is too full.
  • You often cancel important appointments with your doctor, counselor or dentist because of other last minute commitments.
  • You don’t schedule important appointments because you believe you do not have enough time.
  • You finish the sentences of other people because you want them to get to the point.
  • You find that you get easily offended or you are snappy with people.
  • You experience road rage.
  • You wished you had more energy.
  • Your home and/or car are unorganized.
  • You want to take care of yourself by meditating, praying or getting quiet but just don’t have the time.
  • You have put on weight lately or you have a difficult time maintaining your ideal weight.
  • You drink alcohol alone.
  • You have chaotic relationships or you do not have the time to maintain friendships.
  • You purchase educational programs or exercise equipment but you never use them.
  • You work six to seven days a week.
  • You take your work home regularly.

You may have some of the signs or all of the signs. But whatever the degree of severity may be for you, you can still find balance for your life.  Getting your life in order is a process but with a sound plan you can do it!  Begin by asking the questions, “What do I really want?”, “What does balance look like for me?” or “What is the main cause of this unbalance in my life?”.

I am happy and joyful to report that last month I decided to get my peace back! I invite you to read my blog post “8 Powerful Strategies to Jump Start your Morning” for great tips on starting your day off right and specific ways to get your balance.

I am so excited about your future and I look forward to walking on this beautiful journey with you. Contact me today to learn how I can help you achieve your goals or speak at your organization .

8 Powerful Strategies to Jump Start your Morning!

4 Mar

Morning Routine photoImagine how different your life would be if you had a morning routine that ensured a good day. Does your morning routine consist of staying in bed as late as possible while barely making it to work on time?If you’re like most people, your morning is probably rushed or busy before you even hit the floor. This can lead to unhealthy behavior such as yelling at the kids, kicking the family dog, eating an unhealthy snack or skipping breakfast all together.Having a wonderful morning and an impactful day just takes a few adjustments to your mindset and routine. Long lasting results requires a shift in your patterns.  So let’s jump in!

Here are a few simple ideas to implement so you can have productive and peaceful mornings:

1.Wake up earlier.  You’ll need some extra time in the morning to accommodate your mindful changes. Going to bed earlier makes this task easier. Set your alarm for an half an hour earlier each morning until you build up to an hour or ninety minute.

2.Visualize and Imagine good things. Right before you get out of bed. Begin to imagine how well your day will go. Visualize yourself being productive, happy and peaceful. Take some time to thank God for this new day that you will embark on.

3. Meditate . Take 10 minutes to practice meditation. Meditation brings awareness, focus and it allows us to get direct spiritual downloads. This will allow your day to have a peaceful glow to it.

4. Enjoy a little exercise. Take a walk, jump on the treadmill, or dance to some beautiful music. Focus on positive thoughts and get your body moving.

5.Shower on Affirmations. While taking your morning shower repeat affirmations to yourself. Use this time to shower yourself with positive thoughts and energy. Affirmations can truly transform your thinking and your life.

6.Eat a nutritious breakfast.  Having a green smoothie, vegetable omelet or oatmeal with fruit will get you off to a great start. It is amazing how we feel when we take care of ourselves. Soon you will notice that you make better eating choices throughout the day. During your meal, take time to be mindful of the flavors, colors, smells and texture of your food. This practice of being mindful will add to your eating experience.

 7. Drink a glass of water. Keep water by your bed and in your car. Drinking water the first thing in the morning compels your body to function at its optimal best.  Drinking water keeps your body and mind hydrated. Yes your brain needs water to function at its optimal best. So drink up.

8.Write out your Agenda for the day. Be sure take a few minutes to write and review your agenda for the day. Writing a list of priorities will assist you in making good decisions with your time throughout the day. Placing the most difficult task at the top of your list will help you to prioritize your daily tasks.  Having a daily agenda will empower you to be more productive each day.

Now you’re ready to get out there and accomplish something. How could you not be successful? The keys are to practice meditation, eat healthy and to have an agenda each day. A well thought out morning routine can have a significant impact on your life, peace, joy and success. Give it a try and see how it changes your day.

I am so excited about your future and I look forward to walking on this beautiful journey with you. Contact me today to learn how I can help you achieve your goals or speak at your organization .
